Marine biologist Lars Kleivane have initiated the work and the development of the ARTS/RN with Restech Norway AS, and he have for the last 10 years deployed this whale tag launcher in various field operations, involving instrumentation of baleen whales (minke whales, humpback whales, sei whales, fin whales, blue whales and bowhead whales) and toothed whales (killer whales & pilot whales).
During field operations in 2008, further development of the biopsy system using a new dart the ARTdart was a success. And the combined system is herby renamed to ARTSBS (Arial Rocket Tag System & Biopsy System)
LKARTS-Norway, has developed LKcarriers for various tag designs, and laboured the details and adjustments involved with numerous new tags. Initially, the carrier was developed in cooperation with Mikkel Villum Jensen, Danmark.
Kleivane is a field-specialist working with tagging techniques involving tag design and tag attachments, and he is especially involved with the operational parts in the approach of the whales and the deployment of tags.
LKARTS-Norway can today deliver tagging equipment needed for both small scale behaviour studies involving VHF tracking technologies, and also for large scale migration studies involving satellite tags linked to ARGOS. Commercial available tags (radio/satellite) and dataloggers are laboured to fit the ARTSBS system.
The launcher ARTSBS may be purchased from Restech-Norway without the involvement of LKARTS-Norway. In that case the research project develops their own way of using the system. LKARTS-Norway will not contract with new projects without being involved in their field operation. However, when LKARTS-Norway is contracted along with the ARTSBS during initiation of new projects, Lars Kleivane will handle the technical matters related to new tags. In buying the ARTSBS and contracting LKARTS-Norway new projects only need to by tags to be ready for action. On momentum is timing, especially in the northern hemisphere. The field season from April to October is often hectically busy.
Involving LKARTS-Norway also implement instruction of involved researchers in safety aspects of the system, and a training protocol of the ARTSBS.
