The company Restech Norway AS has donated an air pressure driven line throwing gun (PLT) to "Redningsselskapets Sjøredningsskole".
Restech are producing this gun, which launches rescue lines from Norwegian rescue vessels over to vessels in distress. Now the company has donated a gun to "Redningsselskapets Sjøredningsskole"
"We are very grateful for this gift from Restech, says the general manager at the naval rescue school, Jarl Berge Larsen.
The air pressure driven gun is used when the rescue vessel don't have the opportunity to get in close enough to the distressed vessel to throw out a line manually. The gun has a shooting range for app 230 meters.
Line guns are not something new within the rescue business. Before these rescue ships existed, they shot harpoons carrying lines over to ships in distress, by using gun powder charged guns. This however, was a dangerous and not always successful operation.
The new, very accurate guns use compressed air as a replacement for gun powder, and the invention itself is said to come from a previous Captain/Navigator on a Rescue vessel.
